I first started making mosaics in 1997 after a visit to an exhibition of Martin Cheek’s mosaics in Ramsgate library. I was fascinated by the diversity you can attain with mosaics and the idea of continuing with a centuries old tradition – it’s also good to be involved in a slow process in our hectic world.

Previously I had worked with textiles and, like many before me, found that this background held me in good stead with mosaics. I’m drawn to colour and pattern in my work and it’s fantastic to know that the mosaic won’t fade; it will still have the same vibrant hues in years to come.

As well as developing my own work with vitreous glass and ceramic tiles I have studied traditional methods of mosaic making in Ravenna, Italy. My extensive teaching experience has also enabled me to run courses to introduce people to the absorption and fascination of mosaic. For five years I was a tutor with the Edward James Foundation and taught mosaic courses at West Dean College near Chichester.

In 2007 I moved to my premises in the Creative Quarter. It’s great to be surrounded by other creative people and, as well as having a gallery for my work, I’ve been able to take on larger commissions such as the mosaic entrance floor to the old Earl Harris shop in the Old High Street.

I offer one day courses to learn the skills of mosaic which are proving very popular and also sell a wide range of tools and tiles. Please come in and introduce yourself to a new experience! .
